Home Modifications for Seniors and Disabled

After several years of modifying homes for disabled veterans, Holladay Brothers Construction has added numerous services for elderly citizens who wish to remain in their homes as they age; also known as “Seniors Aging in Place”. 

The 60+ age group is one of the fastest growing populations in the U.S., and most elderly people have one thing in common: they would rather stay in their homes than move into an assisted living facility or a nursing home. Maintaining their independence and being surrounded by personal memories contribute to a senior’s overall sense of well-being.

At Holladay Brothers Construction, we work with seniors to make their homes safer and easier to use while they enjoy their later years. The primary goals of our home modifications are to remove barriers, improve access and mobility throughout the home, and most importantly, to prevent falls and injuries.

We utilize the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) standards and specifications in the design process to make sure changes to your home are safe and functional. Each home is evaluated and assessed on an individual basis for basic safety hazards, and recommendations are tailored to each individual or family. We strive to incorporate the principles of Universal Design in each home, which means that our improvements can be used by people of all physical abilities and are aesthetically pleasing.

SERVICES WE PROVIDE

Main Level Living Modifications: One of the biggest obstacles for seniors living independently is having the laundry room in the basement and navigating a staircase with an armload of laundry. We’ll examine your home to see if it is feasible to move the laundry area to the main floor. We can also modify your floor plan to make sure your bedroom, bathroom and living areas are all on one level, and eliminate the need for climbing stairs. If stairs are unavoidable, we can install a variety of stair-lifts or chair-lifts.

Outdoor Access Modifications: We install wooden ramps (which can be removed later) and/or concrete (more permanent) ramps with handrails to allow access for walkers and wheelchairs. Ramps can be added in the front or rear of the home, and doors hardware/doorways modified for ease of entry. Adequate lighting at the entry way is also addressed.

Bathroom Modifications: Installation of barrier-free (walk-in) showers and tubs, grab bars near the toilet and tub and single-lever faucets make bathrooms safer and easier to use.  Wall-mounted sinks and vanities accommodate seated users by allowing them to get closer to the sink. Reinforced grab bars can be installed to look like elegant towel bars. Doorways and hallways can be widened for easier navigation for walkers and wheelchairs.

Kitchen Modifications: Installation of shallow kitchen sinks with single-lever faucets and knee-space underneath allow for easy reaching and access for seated users.

Flooring Modifications: Bulky thresholds and loose flooring transitions are mitigated to eliminate tripping hazards.

Covered Porches and Patios: If you find yourself wanting to spend more time outdoors, we can create a covered porch or patio for your enjoyment. Covered walkways from your home to garage can also be installed for protection from the elements.
